I completely believe that smiling and laughing contribute to yor overall happiness - even when you don't feel like it!
It's so important to have fun and enjoy life, induldge once in a while - have that extra scoop of ice cream. What's the point in living longer if you didn't enjoy it?!

Being Mexican I totally relate to the fact that northamerican people like to smile more than laugh.
I believe that northamericans are too self conscious to let themselves laugh. Whereas in Mexico we always let our true emotions show.
