Storm Douglas aka "Storm Dooglas" blew through La Manzanilla area leaving a lot of people to sop up water, sand, and mud. While, we at Casa del Viento only suffered a few broken windows, smashed potted palm trees, some broken ornaments and outdoor lighting fixtures, the waves crashed onto the streets of the village leaving fishermen to drag their boats to safety and some homeowners and storeowners to clean up after Douglas. Here is some footage that has been shared with us which you can check out on: http://lamanzanilla.ning.com/

Today we received a wonderful email with a link to a photo gallery created by a good friend. The sharing of this photo gallery depicts many good times we had with these friends and our family of Rhodesian Ridgebacks at Casa del Viento in La Manzanilla.

It is Monday and the start of another week in La Manzanilla. In Mexico the weeks are six working days long so Sunday is very special when it arrives. Yesterday or as they say in Spanish "ayer" was Sunday and a beach day was in order. Tenacatita was in full splendor with white sands, nice surf and the ocean not warm but refreshing. Well that was yesterday and today is today and the stairs to our new swimming pool are being poured; hopefully finishing of the stairs will occur this week but one of the maestros is not here as he enjoyed his Sunday a little too much and was not able to rise for the occasion. This is something that happens on Mondays with regularity as the Sundays are just too much fun with drinking cervezas, tequila and such. The Mexican way is to live in the moment and at this moment I am writing a blog that is supposed to make people interested enough to spend time to read what is going on here in La Manzanilla in June 2008. For those of you reading this it is another sunny day in paradise and I am just trying to live 5 minutes at a time. Catch up with this blog later for more exciting things to be written.

Remember that band called “Smiling Faces”? Maybe not, you are probably too young. A music review this is not, but the group’s name does strike a cord with Dooglas (his Mexican name for Douglas) and I since living in Mexico. There is a fundamental joy to existence here. How many Canadians and Americans realize that our NAFTA partner to the south of us live their daily lives in a country? where kindness and happiness are way off the charts compared to what we are used to where you can live well on far less with some adjustments in your expectations where everyone has access to affordable health care where virtually everyone welcomes you where you do not hear frequent swearing where there are fabulous markets, beautiful beaches, fantastic weather, art and culture and a bus system that goes everywhere where your efforts to speak Spanish are greeted with smiling enthusiasm
There are scientific studies that show singing and smiling even when one feels sad will increase your endorphins. Mexicans all seem to know this. Smiling exercises and happy thoughts are something that Dooglas and I agreed to practice for ½ hour per day. Still working on that! Is the reason for the smiling faces geographical having more to do with living in La Manzanilla on the Costa Alegre (Happy Coast)? We shall see.
